Light Therapy

Light Therapy works by exposing the body to specific wavelengths of light, which trigger biological processes to treat various conditions. The mechanism depends on the type of light used:

  1. For Mood & Sleep (SAD, Jet Lag):

    • Mechanism: Bright white light, rich in blue wavelengths, enters the eyes and stimulates special cells in the retina.

    • Effect: This signals the brain's master clock (suprachiasmatic nucleus) to suppress melatonin (the sleep hormone) and reset the circadian rhythm, promoting alertness and stabilizing sleep-wake cycles.

  2. For Skin & Tissue (Acne, Anti-aging, Healing):

    • Blue Light: Is absorbed by bacteria in the skin, producing toxic molecules that destroy them (e.g., for acne).

    • Red & Near-Infrared Light: Penetrates deeper and is absorbed by the mitochondria in our cells.

    • Effect: This boosts cellular energy (ATP) production, reduces inflammation, and stimulates repair and healing processes.

  3. For Jaundice (in newborns):

    • Mechanism: Blue light converts bilirubin, a toxic compound created by the liver, into a form that the baby can easily excrete.

In short, Light Therapy uses targeted light as a drug-free tool to directly influence our biology at a cellular level.
